Rome, Italy (My Sportsbook) - Sampdoria failed to join Serie A leaders Inter Milan on 19 points on Sunday as the club was held to a 1-1 draw by Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.
Inter's 5-0 thrashing of Genoa on Saturday moved the Nerazzurri three points clear of Sampdoria, but the visitors were only able to get back one point as Giampaolo Pazzini put Samp ahead in the 40th minute, only for Lazio to pull the goal back two minutes later through Francesco Matuzalem.
Both sides had a player sent off in the second half, but it was the play of Sampdoria goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi that helped to keep the game level as he made two important saves in stoppage time to preserve a point for his team.
Sampdoria had the best chance early on as Antonio Cassano's effort from six yards forced a good reaction stop from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, but he was unable to stop the opening goal from arriving five minutes before the break.
Marco Padalino chipped a short cross to the center of the box from the right and Pazzini got his head to the ball, slipping it inside the right post.
The response was swift from Lazio and they leveled the match two minutes later with Tommaso Rocchi lobbing a ball over the top that Matuzalem brought down inside the box and fired inside the far post.
Sampdoria was reduced to 10 men in the 55th minute when Padalino picked up his second yellow card for a late challenge on Lazio's Aleksandar Kolarov, but the hosts were down to 10 men as well in the 73rd minute when Roberto Baronio was booked for the second time.
Cassano nearly put Sampdoria ahead with six minutes left when he fired a shot off the crossbar from outside the area, but it was Castellazzi that produced two big saves in stoppage time to allow the visitors to leave Rome with a point.
The first save came on Julio Cruz, who had a good look at goal from eight yards, but fired into the legs of the keeper, while Castellazzi made a diving stop on Stefano Mauri's header shortly before the final whistle.
Atalanta earned its first win of the season by stunning Udinese, 3-1, Parma got a goal from Valeri Bojinov in the sixth minute and held out for a 1-0 victory over Siena, while Cristian Maggio's goal in stoppage time allowed Napoli to claim a 2-1 win against Bologna.
Catania slipped past Cagliari, 2-1, with a goal from Jorge Martinez in the 88th minute, Bari toppled Chievo, 2-1, Fabrizio Miccoli and Federico Balzaretti scored second-half goals to lead Palermo to a 2-1 win over last- placed Livorno, and AC Milan got goals from Ronaldinho and Pato to edge Roma 2-1.
