Jones bloodied, beaten by undefeated Calzaghe

New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Welshman Joe Calzaghe took advantage of a gory cut above the left eye of Roy Jones Jr. and likely finished his career unbeaten by scoring a 12-round unanimous decision Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

The fight for the light heavyweight championship as recognized by Ring Magazine turned out to be a walk in the park for Calzaghe, who was actually knocked down in the first round but won 118-109 on all three scorecards.

In just his second fight in the United States, Calzaghe (46-0) dominated after the cut opened above Jones' eye in the third round. It was the first time Jones was cut in his career.

Calzaghe landed 344 out of a total 985 punches thrown, easily the largest assault seen against Jones in his storied career. He also dominated the jabs, landing with a 120-12 margin in the bout.

After the fight, Calzaghe said it may have been the last bout of his career. The same could be said for Jones (52-5), who was coming off a dominating decision win over Felix Trinidad in January. But on Saturday, he was no match for Calzaghe or the ugly cut he sustained.

The 36-year-old Calzaghe earned a split decision over ex-Jones victim Bernard Hopkins this past April after going down in the first round. The same thing happened on Saturday, but the cut quickly changed the momentum.

In the opening round, Jones landed a left jab to the face and then followed that with a roundhouse right. The punch hit Calzaghe's forearm as he was going down in the final minute of the round.

"I was stunned. He caught me with a good shot," said Calzaghe. "That's what champions are all about. When I go down I just get upset."

Before the start of round two, blood was seeping from the bridge of Calzaghe's nose.

In the second round, Calzaghe pounded Jones against the ropes for a time, and in the next round both fighters did a bit of showboating, but the Welshman fired punches at a much quicker rate than his elder opponent.

The rate of punches landed in rounds three and four were nearly 3-to-1 in favor of Calzaghe, who kept egging on Jones, even after receiving the blunt of some punches upstairs.

"I just gave my best effort, but the guy was a better man," said Jones. "I got off my game plan and he won."

The fifth round saw Calzaghe land a flurry of punches, and Jones started to have some swelling above his left eye, but he was smiling at the end of the round.

Calzaghe continued to have more pep in his step in round six, but was the recipient of a big uppercut in the final minute.

Calzaghe charged toward Jones with 1 1/2 minutes left in the seventh round. Blood then started to flow above Jones' left eye, and he was clearly hampered by the eye problem. Calzaghe continued his flurry and kept pounding away as Jones tried to cover his face, but the flood streamed down his face as the round came to a close with Calzaghe confidently holding out his arms.

Round eight brought more of a gory scene with Jones' face covered with blood, and Calzaghe methodically applied pressure with a target on the left eye. Jones' corner tried patching up the eye, but it was no use, as the blood continued to stream. Nevertheless, the former four-division champion went out for another round.

The ninth round saw Calzaghe slow down a bit, but he didn't really need to punch that much as Jones continued to be hampered with the eye problem and was tentative offensively. The same could be said for the following round.

Blood even started to mount on the shirt of referee Hubert Earle, and in the last round Calzaghe was high-stepping with about a minute to go, knowing the decision was well in hand.
